SEAWEEDS & ALGAES

Spectrum uses a nutrient-balanced basket of seaweeds and algae in the Spectrum Nutrition Formula. This “basket” of seaweeds and algae varieties ensures a well-rounded nutrient profile. Our omnivore Spectrum formulas have more aquatic veggies than many so-called “herbivore” diets. AlgaeMAX contains additional varieties of algae for a total of nine (9).

Spirulina

New Life Spectrum® includes significant Spirulina in all our formulas. Spirulina’s reputation as a “superfood” is well known and well earned. This spiral single-celled warm water blue-green plankton is rich in vitamins A1, B1, B2, B6 and B12, and vitamins C and E. Plus, Spriulina contains natural color enhancing pigments like beta carotene and a range of aquarium vital minerals that enhance the full range of fish colors — including blue coloration. Spirulina is also high in protein and amino acids (up to 62% amino acid content). And spirulina is very easy for your aquarium dwellers to digest. The result: more of this ingredient is converted to biologically useful nutrient and less into waste. New Life Spectrum® uses a higher percentage of Spirulina in it’s standard formula than many so-called “herbivore” diets.

Chlorella

Chlorella_Icon_Lg-150x150.png

Chlorella Seaweed is a warm water green algae rich in a wide variety of nutrients: including vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6, and vitamin A — as well as aquarium-essential minerals and trace elements. Per gram, Chlorella’s high chlorophyll content not only makes it an extremely rich green, but enhances the blues and greens in aquarium fish and invertebrates. Chlorella is commonly used as a nutritional supplement for humans. Because it’s aquatic vegetation, Chlorella is easily digested by your fish and other aquarium companions. This results in more of the nutrients being absorbed and less expelled into the aquarium as waste. New Life Spectrum® uses Chlorella as a main veggie ingredient in all our formulas.

Ulva Seaweed

Also known as “sea lettuce”, this green macro-algae (seaweed) is a well-known source of aquarium nutrition. Aquarium hobbyists often cultivate it in refrigiums attached to their tanks as grazing food for herbivores like Tangs. Ulva is high in soluble fiber, as well as magnesium, iron, and vitamin A and B12. It also contains vitamin C, vitamin E and B6 — as well as Niacin. Ulva is also rich in beta-carotene, a natural colorant that enhances the red, yellow and orange vibrancy of your fish. New Life Spectrum® includes Ulva in all our formulas.

Kelp

Kelp_Icon_Lg-150x150.png

Kelp is a form of brown macro algae that grows in thick forest-like clusters in the shallow ocean waters. A great source of sea-based vegetable fiber, Kelp is also rich in the essential minerals and trace elements found in the ocean. This includes potassium, magnesium, iron and calcium and trace minerals like selenium and manganese. Plus, Kelp contains high levels of vitamins K and B9 (folate). It is the seaweed most commonly found in fish foods. Spectrum includes Ulva in all our formulas.

WAKAME SEAWEED

Wakame seaweed is a sea vegetable popular in Japanese cuisine. Despite it’s dark green appearance, it’s biologically a brown algae. Wakame is an excellent source of Riboflavin (vitamin B2), which assists in the absorption and utilization of carbohydrates, fats (lipids) and protein. In addition, Wakame seaweed is high in vitamins A, C, D, E and K. Beyond vitamins, this sea vegetable contains essential minerals and trace elements common in the ocean but often lacking in the aquarium: iron, magnesium, selenium and more.

RED ALGAE

Included in AlgaeMAX Formulas: Rhodophyta-class algae (known commonly as “Red Algae”) is one of the nine varieties of algae and seaweed featured in New Life Spectrum® AlgaeMAX. Red Algae is extremely rich in antioxidants in addition to protein, vitamins and fiber. Our herbivore formula features nine varieties of algae and seaweed, including red, green, blue-green and brown sea vegetation. This “basket” approach ensures your herbivorous aquarium companions have the multi-faceted diet ideal for grazing fish.
